Beastgrip

Beastgrip started the fire under the "phoneography" trend and has kept it burning ever since into an established market. Their initial offers were a 3D-printed apparatus that allowed users to attach a professional lens to their iPhone. This innovation by Vadym Chalenko (CEO) grew into a company that has been growing ever since, now offering consumer products with the feel and quality of professional camera rigs. With a Beastgrip your phone becomes a professional film-making tool.

Situation

When the iPhone 6S hit the market smart phones finally became comparable in the megapixel department to some DSLR cameras. Beastgrip envisioned a new market for "phoneography" where people use their smart phones as an alternative to purchasing a expensive, complex, 1-dimensional, camera.

Process

Vadym contacted me with an idea to create a system around the original Beastgrip to fully utilize its potential. This would require us to invent and design multiple parts that interfaced seemlessly not only with the Beastgrip but existing professional camera equipment. Our brainstorms and conversations led to the production of three different tools: the Ballhead, the Phone Clamp, and the Platform.

Initial collaborative sketches to brainstorm mechanisms and compliance with the established standardized system.

Product

Beastgrip expanded on this platform design, working closely with their manufacturer, adopting it to the rapidly expanding and iterative smart phone market. The system has continued to evolve since our initial collaboration in 2017.
